12. San Antonio, Texas
Great for: Texas history, theme park thrills, and spending time on the San Antonio River

You might associate San Antonio with the Alamo, and the city’s in the midst of its $550-million Alamo Plan to preserve the landmark, which includes a new visitor center and museum expected to open in 2027. But San Antonio’s also known as the Theme Park Capital of Texas (its four major parks include the world’s first ultra-accessible theme park) and is home to kid-friendly museums, attractions, parks, and cool natural wonders like Natural Bridge Caverns. Strolling or floating along the River Walk and visiting the Historic Market Square are two must-do’s for families.

Family vacations on the West Coast
1. San Diego, California
Great for: Beach vacations with lots of extra activities

San Diego is California’s ultimate family vacation spot, delivering great year-round weather, family-friendly beaches, plenty of activities that are both fun and educational (just don’t tell the kids), and a laidback vibe that’s super-conducive to traveling with the whole family. Don’t miss Balboa Park, a huge park with a free tram to get you between free activities like museums and a botanical garden. Also in the park (but not free) is the world-famous-for-a-reason San Diego Zoo. Extend the animal experience with a trip north to the zoo’s Safari Park, and as long as you’re headed in that general direction, zip across to the coast for a visit to Legoland in Carlsbad.
Where to stay:
Kings Inn San Diego (Budget): The vibes are retro but the comfort level is firmly rooted in the now at this property located in San Diego’s Hotel Circle area. The outdoor pool will please the kids, and the guest laundry facilities and fitness room will be pluses for parents. Have breakfast at the on-site diner-style Waffle Spot, and gather for dinner at the hotel’s Mexican restaurant.
Pacific Terrace Hotel (Mid-range): For a family-friendly beachside stay, this resort is a winner, with an oceanfront heated pool and easy access to a beach outfitted with chairs, umbrellas, towels, and even boogie boards to borrow. Rooms are spacious, and freshly baked afternoon cookies bridge the gap between lunch and dinner.
Hotel del Coronado (Splurge): This grande dame of the San Diego hotel scene has gotten a facelift that’s restored it to its former glory. For an iconic family vacation on the San Diego island of Coronado (a quick drive from downtown), this is the hotel that started it all. Lounge by the pool, splash at the beach, and while away the days with surf lessons and beach bonfires.
2. Palm Springs, California
Great for: Golfers, hikers, architecture buffs, and shoppers

Palm Springs was meant for multi-gen family trips. It’s got something for everyone: perfect pools, golf courses galore, chic shopping, and most importantly, the world’s best date shakes. For families looking to thaw out during the chilly months, it’s a desert dream, with warm temps even in winter. Extra points for its proximity to Joshua Tree National Park, which is about a 45-minute drive away. Mix things up by spending a few nights in each place: Palm Springs is all about the relaxation, while Joshua Tree packs in lots of fun hiking adventures.
Where to stay:
The Skylark (Budget): Families are welcomed at this updated reimagining of a classic 1950s desert motel. Rooms wrap around the pool courtyard with views of the dramatic mountains beyond. Midcentury modern rooms are clean, spacious, and comfortable.
Drift Palm Springs (Mid-range): This small downtown hotel offers something most Palm Springs hotels don’t: one- to four-bedroom hotel suites big enough for families that don’t want to share a single room. Rooms are chic and the pool is pure Palm Springs, complete with citrus-hued umbrellas and dramatic desert views.
Omni Rancho Las Palmas (Splurge): Its location in Rancho Mirage puts it about 20 minutes away from downtown Palm Springs, but that feels like a minor trade for what you get. This sprawling resort is like a world unto itself with its own just-the-right-size water park with lazy river, a toddler-ready “beach,” and tame-enough-for-kids waterslides. Cabanas line the pools, on-site eateries range from upscale to grab-and-go, and a golf course and spa are woven right into the property.
3. Orange County, California
Great for: A theme park and beach vacation in one

Orange County in Southern California mixes iconic beach cities like Dana Point and Huntington Beach with Anaheim’s Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park. It’s essentially a one-stop shop for families seeking Southern California fun. For best results, give yourself a few days on the coast and then stay closer to Anaheim (potentially at one of the Disneyland properties) for your time at the parks.
Where to stay:
Howard Johnson by Wyndham Anaheim Hotel and Water Playground (Budget): The Disneyland theme parks are within walking distance of this pick, but little ones will find plenty of thrills right at the hotel’s Castaway Cove water playground. Book a bunk bed room and it might be easy to get them to go to sleep after a long day of fun.
Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort and Spa (Mid-range): At this stylish hotel, a big pool with waterslides and a beach concierge to outfit you with everything you need for a great day in the water. Bonus: There’s a seasonal shuttle to Disneyland so you don’t have to choose between beach or Mouse.
Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach Resort & Club (Splurge): Make lasting memories at this luxury resort set on a seaside bluff, where you can boogie board or take surfing lessons at the private beach club or splash in the pool. Book a Fireside Terrace Room or Suite to continue the family together time into the evenings.
4. Monterey, California
Great for: Wildlife and coastal vibes

California’s Central Coast has plenty of kid- and adult-pleasing stops, but Monterey and its neighboring town of Pacific Grove (home to a magnificent annual butterfly migration in the fall months) dazzle wildlife-crazy families. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is one of the world’s best, a place where you can watch otters play and jellyfish glow in a beautifully designed space that makes the most of its bayside location.
Where to stay:
Hampton Inn Monterey (Budget): You know what you’re getting with a family stay at a Hampton Inn: free hot breakfast, free parking, free Wi-Fi, and reliably comfortable beds. Bonus points for a central location about a 15-minute walk from the beach.
Intercontinental The Clement (Mid-range): If easy access to downtown sights and the Monterey Bay Aquarium are your top priorities, this is the place to stay. It’s a very short walk to the aquarium and is a family-friendly spot that makes everything feel easy. Bonus: The pool, while small, is a win for kids.
Monterey Beach Hotel, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel (Splurge): Set along Monterey State Beach, this comfortable and pet-friendly beach hotel is a 10-minute drive from Cannery Row and the aquarium. Make sure to be here as the sun goes down, when the windows looking out on the Pacific perfectly frame the sunset.
5. Santa Cruz, California
Great for: Learning to surf, throwback beach vacations, and giant redwoods
Chill vibes rule in the university beach town of Santa Cruz. The biggest draws here are the beach (a favorite spot for learning to surf) and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, an old-fashioned stretch of rides, midway games, and carnival food. But there’s plenty more to do and see in and around Santa Cruz, including the fun and educational Seymour Science Center and the chance to walk among giant redwoods at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park just up the hill.
Where to stay:
La Quinta Inn & Suites Santa Cruz (Budget): The value-for-money quotient is high at the Santa Cruz outpost of this mid-priced hotel brand. The recently built property is fresh and modern, there’s a pool and hot tub, and parking, breakfast, and WiFi are complimentary.

Located where Main Beach meets Monterey Bay, the hotel makes it easy to enjoy its surroundings, with beach butler service, complimentary bikes, and walking and hiking routes mapped out for guests by RunGo. Grownups should try to plan a little time at the rooftop spa.
6. Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada
Great for: Ski and snowboard vacations, summer fun in the lake, and seasonal hiking

In winter, Lake Tahoe is a dream family vacation spot for skiing and snowboarding, with dozens of ski resorts clustered around the lake and tucked into the surrounding mountains. But for many, the real draw is summer in South Lake Tahoe, when the hiking is both kid-friendly and fantastic, the water is still cold but swimmable, the beaches beckon, and activities like music, festivals, and farmers markets draw locals and visitors alike. Kids love the three ropes courses in the area. And don’t rule out staying at or at least visiting neighboring lake Donner Lake. It’s a little quieter, a little warmer, and its big sand beach at West End Beach is a must-visit.

New Villa Suites are a great option for families, with two- to five-bedrooms, multiple bathrooms, and lake views.
7. Sacramento, California
Great for: Hands-on museums, easy access to nature, Gold Rush history, and a kid-friendly food scene
Sacramento is a fantastic destination for families, and though it’s California’s state capital, it sometimes gets overlooked as a vacation spot. When you’re there (and especially if you’re visiting with younger kids), don’t miss the raised wooden sidewalks and Old West feel of the Old Sacramento neighborhood. Budget a few hours for what has to be one of the nation’s best train museums, the California State Railroad Museum. The zoo in Sacramento isn’t huge, but it’s full of interesting and happy animals and is right next door to the little-kid-friendly Fairytale Town and Funderland Amusement Park.
Where to stay:

8. Yosemite National Park, California
Great for: Nature enthusiasts and hikers of all levels

A trip to Yosemite is a must for every nature-loving family. Whether you’ve seen it once or a thousand times, that first look at the valley—the towering cliffs of El Capitan, the massive arch of Half Dome, and the delicate lines of the valley’s waterfalls—is always a beautiful shock. Easy trails like the loop to see Lower Yosemite Falls, bike rides along the trails of the valley, and stops at the historic Ahwahnee hotel’s candy shop are perfect for kids who aren’t totally sold on nature. And for older kids and their families, the challenging but also totally incredible hike up to Vernal Falls along the Mist Trail (which should be renamed the Rainbow Trail for all the rainbows you hike by on your way up) is something truly special.
Where to stay:
Curry Village (Budget): Consider it camping with a bed. In always-lively Curry Village, tent cabins feel rustic but not too rustic, with beds and electricity. There are also motel rooms and little cabins with private bathrooms. There’s a pool open in summer and an ice skating rink in winter.

Complimentary bikes are available for exploring the area, while lots of city sights are just a short walk away.
The Bidwell Marriott Portland (Splurge): The Bidwell is located in downtown Portland near restaurants, parks, and other attractions. But it’s also a good jumping off point for exploring the area’s natural side, especially with one complimentary outdoor equipment rental per day from Base Camp. The hotel takes design inspiration from the Pacific Northwest, and the on-site restaurant serves up oysters, Pinot Noir, and other regional food and drink.
11. Cannon Beach, Oregon
Great for: Beach enthusiasts and Goonies fans

Cannon Beach’s Haystack Rock, a massive basalt sea stack that sits over 200 feet above the surrounding beach, has had a starring role in classic kids movies including The Goonies and Kindergarten Cop. But the real reason to go is that, up-close, it’s an amazing sight in real life, too. At low-tide, the rock is ringed by tide pools. Looking up at the rock at any time of day, you’ll likely see the birds that love the lofty vantage point. Beyond Haystack Rock, though, there’s even more family fun to be had in the town of Cannon Beach.
